What is the South London Waste Partnership?

The South London Waste Partnership (SLWP) is an innovative and collaborative initiative that brings together the boroughs of Croydon, Kingston, Merton, and Sutton.

This voluntary partnership aims to deliver a harmonized waste management service to over 1 million residents, ensuring a sustainable and efficient approach to waste disposal and recycling.

The SLWP has been instrumental in driving positive change and improving recycling rates across the four boroughs. Through strategic service changes and a strong emphasis on resident engagement, the partnership has successfully encouraged individuals to embrace recycling practices and reduce their overall waste generation.

In 2017, the SLWP awarded Veolia with an ongoing contract and entered into a highly successful collaboration. Since the commencement of the contract, the recycling rates within the SLWP have experienced a remarkable increase. This achievement can be attributed to the efforts made by the partnership to educate and motivate residents to recycle as much as they can.

As a result of these collective efforts and the commitment of the four boroughs, the SLWP has positioned itself among the top 8 recycling performers in London for the year 2021/22. This accomplishment is a testament to the dedication and determination of the partnership to minimize waste and promote sustainable living practices.

Furthermore, the SLWP has also prioritised waste reduction, aiming to minimize the volume of general waste generated across the four boroughs. Through effective waste management strategies, including waste reduction campaigns and initiatives, the partnership has successfully reduced general waste by an impressive 5%. This reduction not only contributes to the overall sustainability goals of the boroughs but also helps in conserving valuable resources and protecting the environment.

In addition to its focus on waste management and recycling, the SLWP also places great importance on community engagement. The partnership actively works with residents, local businesses, and community organizations to raise awareness about the importance of waste reduction, recycling, and responsible waste disposal. By fostering a sense of collective responsibility, the SLWP aims to create a sustainable waste management culture within the South London community.

Overall, the South London Waste Partnership is a pioneering initiative that has transformed waste management practices in Croydon, Kingston, Merton, and Sutton. Through its collaborative approach, the partnership has achieved remarkable results, including increased recycling rates and significant reductions in general waste. With its ongoing commitment to sustainability and community engagement, the SLWP continues to lead the way in promoting a greener and more environmentally conscious South London.
